HAVE I EVER MISSED A FLIGHT?
Yes! But only once. I flew to Chicago and was to transfer to Indianapolis to meet Larry Gaither to go see his mother (my ‘heart’ sister).
Ellen has been written in other stories but to refresh my readers minds, she and I met in 1962 when she and Betty Brightwell came to visit me from Center Point Baptist Church. Neither of us had family in the Birmingham area. She was from Indiana and I was from West Alabama in Gordo. Both of us had children; she had five and I had two. We ‘clicked’ from the very start of our friendship. Both our husbands worked for Hayes Aircraft. Charles was a stress engineer and Thomas was an aircraft electrician. Eventually, both families attended CPBC.
Anyway, after all the long years of sistership, when Larry arranged for me to visit and be his and Lori’s guest in order to attend Ellen’s 70th Birthday party, I went. I had never flown solo so this was a very new experience for me. Always before, Thomas had been with me flying to Tanya and Joe’s. When I flew to Puerto Rico to see Billy and Valeria, Cindy and Carolyn, Tanya, Tera were with me.
When I got to the airport in Chicago, either their monitor had a light out or I misread their sign and went the wrong way until the plane for Indy had departed. I found out which fight they had that I could catch and they booked me for it. I notified Larry how many hours I’d be late and what flight I’d be on and put my carry-on and purse under my head, lay down on a bench, covered myself with my blanket cape and took a nap. My phone alarm woke me, I caught my flight and Larry met me at the Indy airport.
The reception was great and Ellen was so surprised when Larry, Lori and ‘sister’ Jan arrived at the party. We had a great visit.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained. If you don’t try to do things you want or need to do, you won’t learn for the future. God is our guide, the Bible is our roadmap. HE gives us courage to do things we have not tried before. Put your trust in HIM always and HE will direct your paths.
